My Educational Technology Philosophy

In this digital age, technology has been integrated in many aspects of life. Technology plays a prominent role in our entertainment, communication, shopping experience, health care systems and other areas. However, the integration of technology in the educational system seems to be lacking, especially in Jamaica. It is very important that technology be utilized to enhance teaching. Good teaching with technology enables students to communicate effectively and work collaboratively, to design and produce creative products to demonstrate their learning, to be able to research and use critical thinking skills, and to practice good digital citizenship. A good teacher is able to use technology skillfully to facilitate the exchange of knowledge in the classroom, and to make learning exciting and rewarding.

It is my goal, therefore, to get my students up to par with the various ways technology can enhance their learning experience at school by following the 4 Strands under the MOEYI ICT Integration in the National Standards Curriculum (NSC), in conjunction with the ISTE Standards for the purposeful use of technology in schools. Learning is a beautiful adventure, and technology can be seen as the vehicle that makes the journey much more rewarding, provided the driver (the teacher) maneouvers that vehicle skillfully to guide the students along the voyage to wisdom.

Firstly, I endeavor to guide my students to use technology to communicate their ideas and information, and work collaboratively to support individual needs and contribute to the learning of others. As the educator, I would have to seek out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning. I would have to set the example in working collaboratively, by dedicating time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.

Additionally, I wish educate my students is using digital tools to design and develop creative products to demonstrate their learning and understanding of basic technology operations. I understand that for me to do so effectively, I have to continually improve my practice by learning from and with others, and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to boost student learning. I would adopt the role of the Designer, by designing authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.

Furthermore, I desire to facilitate the use of use appropriate digital tools and resources to plan and conduct research, aid critical thinking, manage projects, solve problems and make informed decisions. I would have to take on the role of the Analyst, by understanding and using data to drive my instruction and research and to support students in achieving their learning goals.

Nonetheless, the use of modern technology does not come without its unique ethical, social and legal risks.  In light of this, I strive to educate my students in recognizing the human, ethical, social, cultural and legal issues and implications surrounding the use of technology and practice online safety and ethical behaviour. I would also have to set the example in this regard by using technology, especially social media, responsibly and positively. As the educator, I aim to inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.

By achieving these goals in successfully incorporating technology in the classroom, I am optimistic that my students will find learning exciting and worthwhile. I am also positive that these tools will enhance my skills in becoming a more effective educator.
